Anti-Racism Office

Anti-Racism Contact Officer (ARCO)

Wellington High Schools Anti-Racism Contact Officer (ARCO) is Grant Roberts who is the acting head teacher of HSIE. He has been at the school since 2008 and has good knowledge of the Wellington High School environment and its workings.

Despite Australia's rich, cultural diversity being acknowledged as one of its greatest strengths as a nation, some individuals can experience unfair treatment and racism because of how they look or where they come from. Racial discrimination can also be subtle, creating systemic barriers that lock people out of social and economic opportunities.

The Racial Discrimination Act 1975 gives effect to Australia's international human rights commitments and promotes equality between people of different backgrounds.

Wellington High School demonstrates the strong commitment of NSW Department of Education (DoE) to combating all forms of racial discrimination in its schools and work-sites and applies to all employees of the department, all students in government schools and has implications for each school's community.

The ARCO is the first point of call when an issue may arise. The issue is discussed and if it cannot be initially resolved the matter is referred to a complaint manager who is appointed by the principal. The ARCO then becomes the support person for the complainant. The matter will then be thoroughly investigated and dealt with accordingly.
