Hunter Valley Beef Bonanza

The Cattle Show Team exhibited a total of 14 steers in the hoof and hook competition at the recent Upper Hunter Beef Bonanza in Scone.

The six students who attended, worked tirelessly for the four days, looking after and preparing the eight led and six unled animals for competition. In the live "hoof" judging on Saturday, we had a very good strike rate, with 4 of the eight steers being awarded ribbons, and our pen of three unled steers being placed second. This is very pleasing when every class had a minimum of 15 entrants, with approximately 300 animals entered in the show.

The highlight, by far, was the awarding of the LIGHT MIDDLE WEIGHT CHAMPIONSHIP to our Speckle Park X Limousin Steer, Dallie. This result placed him ahead of some 72 steers in that section of the competition. In the battle for Grand Champion, Dallie received high praise from the judge Dennis Straughn, former chief meat buyer for Woolworths NSW and highly decorated livestock judge, but was narrowly pipped at the post by the heavy weight champion.
